NAVA Synergy is an incubator program aimed at supporting artists in gaining practical skills and knowledge for forming and growing a sustainable business that will thrive in the competitive market
of the arts.
This year NAVA is running a four week Synergy program, starting on 1st July and finishing with its live crowdfunding event, NAVA Soup Sessions.

Join Think-Act-Change for a screening of ‘Spark; A Burning Man Story‘ followed by a lively panel discussion and audience Q&A where we can delve deep into festival culture, what drives individuals to attend such radical, large scale festivals and what can we as a society learn from them?
ABOUT THE FILM
Spark: A Burning Man Story is a documentary about the dreams and challenges of Burning Man and its unique culture of participatory art. Each year, 60,000 people from around the globe gather in a dusty windswept Nevada desert to build a temporary city, collaborating on large-scale art and partying for a week before burning a giant effigy in a ritual frenzy.
Rooted in principles of self-expression, self-reliance and community effort, Burning Man has grown famous for stirring ordinary people to shed their nine-to-five existence and act on their dreams. SPARK takes us behind the curtain with Burning Man organizers and participants, revealing a year of unprecedented challenges and growth. When ideals of a new world based on freedom and inclusion collide with realities of the “default world,” we wonder which dreams can survive.

Are you curious about what the ‘sharing economy’ is?
Maybe you’re hoping to get in there and participate? Maybe you’re already on the road! Join us for this free event as part of the Changemakers Festival.
This workshop is designed to appeal to all of you. It will explore a range of legal and business issues for startups in the sharing economy. It will provide both practical take-aways and open-ended creative brainstorming.
Hosted by Social Innovation Sydney and facilitated by UNSW staff who are involved in both research and practical support services related to the sharing economy, there will be three sessions.
- One will use business as a starting point, looking at startups in the sharing economy and the challenges of gathering both social and financial resources.
- One will use law as a starting point, looking at different legal structures, sources of legal advice, responses to harm and the blurry line between gift and contract.
- The final session will blend these perspectives, working through specific or experiences of the participants.
So bring along those experiences and your thoughts and join us! You will get the most out of this workshop if you’re ready to workshop an idea with the group.
But if you’d just like to sit up the back in listen-and-learn mode that’s fine too. Light refreshments will be provided. Numbers are limited to allow for interaction so book now!

Paul D Miller (AKA DJ Spooky) is a composer, multimedia artist, editor and author. His trans-disciplinary approach to his creative practice, international profile and large following makes him a perfect agent for change. He is currently the first artist-in-residence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC and is here in Sydney to discuss his latest, local collaboration, The Vanuatu Pacifica Project. This project will realise a Carbon Neutral creative residency program on the Island of Efate, Vanuatu. Paul is looking to spread the idea and for potential project partners, supporters, collaborators and friends to work with.
Paul has collaborated across creative genres working with other artists such as Yoko Ono, orchestras, designers, programmers, film makers. He exhibits and performs globally and has been commissioned to develop work for many Biennales and other arts festivals world wide. His talk and Q&A session will be entertaining, educational and a call to action. You will hear about some of his previous projects including his journeys to Antarctica and Nauru and the production of The Book of Icehttp://www.djspooky.com/antarctica and The Nauru Elegies http://www.djspooky.com/nauruelegies.

We will also be hosting a Deep Dive Dinner with Paul post event $60 per person (tickets below). Funds raised will go toward providing infrastructure for a permaculture food forest to be developed on the Efate site of the Vanuatu Pacifica Project to feed staff and residencies in line with the Carbon Neutral goals of the project.

Designing Social Innovation
Social innovation brings change and one profession ideally suited to delivering change is Design.
Designers have many useful and practical tools for research, analysis, design communication, insight, foresight and delivery.
Just us on Saturday 17th August 2013 for this event. We will start with a panel discussion from Sydney based change makers who are using design in their social innovation and entrepreneurship.
Participants will have the opportunity to pitch their social innovation / change maker ideas and network with possible collaborators.
It will also provide the opportunity to learn about different design tools and experiment with using them.
